Airbus A321XLR seat maps compared: cabins, lavatories and Wi-Fi across six launch airlines
The Airbus A321XLR is the aircraft that finally let single-aisle jets fly like wide-bodies, or as Chris Sloan so elegantly put it, the first subsonic narrow-body aircraft wholly optimised for long-haul since the Vickers VC10. With a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles and flight times pushing 11 hours, the XLR has opened routes (Madrid–Boston, JFK–Edinburgh, Melbourne–Perth) that would once have needed a twin-aisle. Iberia was first out of the gate, in November 2024, and American Airlines, Aer Lingus, Air Canada and Qantas have all since brought it into service, each with a distinctly different idea of how to lay out the cabin. United Airlines is set to follow later this year.
That's what makes the A321XLR such an interesting case study on AeroLOPA: six airlines, one airframe, six very different passenger experiences. Below, we compare the seat maps, the business class hardware, the lavatory-to-passenger ratios (a genuine sticking point on this aircraft), and the Wi-Fi and entertainment fit.
The fleet, seat by seat

American and United are the only carriers flying a true three-class A321XLR, each pairing lie-flat business with a dedicated Premium Economy cabin. The other four run two-class layouts, but at very different densities: Air Canada and Iberia keep it to 182 seats, Aer Lingus stretches to 184, and Qantas has packed in 200, the tightest configuration of the six. United, by contrast, is the most spacious of the bunch at just 150 seats, a number the airline arrived at deliberately: capping capacity there lets it staff the jet with four flight attendants instead of five. Business class hardware
The forward cabin is where the airlines have differentiated themselves most. Iberia went with the Thompson Aero VantageSOLO, a 1-1 herringbone suite (the same seat as JetBlue Mint) offering a fully flat bed and direct aisle access, though without doors.
American's Flagship Suite is also 1-1 with a flat bed, but adds closing doors, a 17-inch 4K screen and wireless charging, echoing the airline's wide-body Flagship product. Air Canada's Signature Class debuts Collins Aurora suites in the same 1-1 herringbone layout, marking the airline's first lie-flat narrow-body product. Aer Lingus runs 16 lie-flat seats arranged in alternating pairs and single "throne" seats.
Qantas is the outlier, naturally since it does serve a different market: its first A321XLRs carry 2-2 recliner business seats (37-inch pitch, 5 inches of recline) rather than a flat bed, aimed at domestic and short international sectors. A dedicated sub-fleet of 16 aircraft with lie-flat business seats is due from 2028 for the airline's longer international routes.
United rounds out the group with a purpose-built Polaris suite for the A321XLR, a proprietary version of the Elevate Altitude seat, arranged 1-1 in an inward-facing herringbone across 10 rows. It's a tighter 32-inch pitch than the wide-body Polaris product, so United compensated with wider shoulder room and more translucent (rather than opaque) privacy dividers to let light move across the cabin. Each suite is 21 inches wide, converts to an 80-inch lie-flat bed, and has sliding doors, a genuine point of difference, since United's related "Coastliner" A321neo will carry the same seat with its doors locked permanently open pending FAA certification.
Lavatory-to-passenger ratios
This is where the A321XLR's single-aisle economics start to show. Airbus's Space-Flex galley-lav module packs a lot of seats into a narrow fuselage, and all six launch carriers originally chose not to fit a mid-cabin lavatory, which puts real pressure on the economy cabin over an 8-to-11-hour flight.

Qantas comes off worst by a wide margin. With just two economy lavatories for 180 passengers, that's one lavatory per 90 people, among the worst ratios in the industry, and far below the roughly 42–49 passengers per lavatory Qantas offers on its A330, 787-9 and A380 wide-bodies. The airline has already reversed course: from the fourth aircraft onward, a row of three economy seats is being removed to install a mid-cabin lavatory, and the first three A321XLRs will be retrofitted to match, bringing the ratio down to about 59:1.
Iberia's arithmetic looks better on paper with three lavatories for 168 economy passengers but in practice it's tighter than the numbers suggest. All three economy lavatories sit at the very back of the aircraft (two built into the Space-Flex galley combo, one directly opposite), and one doubles as a crew jump seat. When a flight attendant uses it, effective capacity drops to a single lavatory for the entire 168-seat cabin. Runway Girl Network's review of Iberia's inaugural flight described a "consistent queue of humans" at the rear galley, a direct consequence of Iberia and Aer Lingus sharing a LOPA that skips the mid-cabin lavatory in favour of cabin commonality and flexibility.
American, United and Air Canada land in the middle: none has a mid-cabin lavatory, but each offers a healthier three-lavatory split for the back of the cabin than Qantas manages. United's Polaris cabin is worth a specific callout. Its single forward lavatory is tucked into the galley and reserved for the 20 business suites alone, while Premium Plus and economy passengers (130 people in total) share the three standard lavs at the rear. The industry rule of thumb for a full-service A321 is at least three economy lavatories, split forward and aft of the cabin, a bar Qantas's original layout notably missed.
Wi-Fi, entertainment and in-seat tech

American's Main Cabin is worth flagging: it's the only one of American's narrow-body fleets to retain seat-back screens at all, at a time after most U.S. carriers shifted economy away from streaming-only. Every seat across all three American cabins also gets Bluetooth pairing, letting passengers use their own headphones with the IFE, a small feature that reviewers have singled out as one of the most appreciated additions on the aircraft. United goes a step further on connectivity: it's outfitting the A321XLR with Starlink from day one and offering it free to MileagePlus members, leapfrogging the satellite systems (Viasat, Panasonic, Intelsat) that the rest of this group still relies on — the only aircraft in this comparison to carry AeroLOPA's top "Best" connectivity rating. Every United cabin also gets a 4K screen, with Polaris uniquely adding Qi wireless charging alongside the usual USB-C and AC power.
Qantas takes the opposite approach, skipping seat-back hardware entirely in favour of streaming to passengers' own devices, consistent with its domestic 737 fleet, but a notable step back in hardware compared with the seat-back screens the other five carriers all install nose to tail. Wi-Fi quality across most of the group sits in the "Better" tier on AeroLOPA's rating scale, reliable for browsing and light streaming, though real-world reviews are mixed: Iberia's Panasonic connection has drawn complaints of dropped connections in early service, even as American positions its Viasat-powered free Wi-Fi as one of the most extensive rollouts of any U.S. carrier.
The takeaway
The A321XLR proves a single-aisle jet can deliver a genuinely premium long-haul cabin. Iberia's, American's and United's lie-flat suites, Air Canada's Aurora suites, and near-universal seat-back IFE all show that. But the aircraft's tight cross-section keeps exposing the same trade-off: every extra business class suite or economy row comes at the expense of galley and lavatory space, and Qantas's 90-passengers-per-lavatory economy cabin is the starkest reminder yet that space-efficient doesn't always mean passenger-friendly. United's approach, deliberately capping the cabin at 150 seats to protect crew staffing and add a blocked-middle "Eurobusiness" row in economy, suggests at least one airline has taken that lesson on board before entering service, rather than after.
